UI Bomb Squad Responds to I-74 Crash

VERMILION COUNTY -- The crash happened right before 10 a.m. Monday morning between a car and a pick-up truck with a trailer. In that trailer, the University of Illinois Bomb Squad commander said were powders and metals used to make commercial fireworks.

If those materials mixed, the commander said they could have possibly become inflamed or could have even exploded. Police say it was such a unique accident that could have quickly turned deadly.

"They're really lucky to be alive, I mean, that was quite a crash. They were very fortunate. All their personal items were scattered everywhere and they were very fortunate to come out of that accident with cuts and scrapes and bruises," UI Bomb Squad Commander Steve Trame said.

Illinois state police have filed charges against both drivers. The driver of the pick-up truck -- for not having a valid driver's license and the driver of the car with -- failure to reduce speed to avoid accident.

Illinois state police are still investigating. As for the firework materials, Tame said officers put them in a bunker in Urbana -- where they still are right now.
