Girl, 9, Kills Gun Instructor in Arizona
This past Monday, a 9-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed a gun instructor while her family was visiting a shooting range in Arizona.
The weapon used was an uzi submachine gun. The 9-year-old somehow lost control.
Local gun experts we spoke to say this is something they've seen all too well and although many of the details are still unfolding, it's evident the weapon was too powerful for the girl to operate.
Dean Hazen of Urbana’s Gun Experts says "this incident you're speaking of is not the first time this has happened. We've learned from it in the past and we start with one round then we can see that that person can control the recoil of that weapon, that they weren’t shocked by it and that it didn’t throw it out of their hand and then we move up to two rounds".
Hazen says even in Illinois--- if it's private property and you want your child to learn how to shoot a gun....it can happen if the shooting range allows it.
Hazen also said normally children start training on pellet guns or BB guns.
Investigators are continuing to look into this case but they don't plan to seek charges.
A director of the gun range issued a statement saying "I regret we let this child shoot and I also regret the instructor was killed in the incident."
