DEVELOPING: Man Killed in Champaign Shooting
DEVELOPING: It's a scene all too familiar for this Douglass Park neighborhood: bullet casings, police tape and sadness. Now -- another young life lost leaves neighbors wanting a change. Chanell Pierce moved here from Chicago less than a year ago.
"We left because violence came too close to home, so then to come down here and it's like a bullet in the side of our house is crazy," Pierce said.
Police investigators say 22-year-old Rakim Vineyard died Saturday after being shot in the 1000 block of North Sixth Street in Champaign. Witnesses told police a man -- no older than 25 -- left the scene with a weapon. Sunday -- church members walked that same block asking why.
"...50 yards from where I'm standing. On a Sunday, nobody's here. What is your problem?" E.V. Davis of Urbana's New Life Church of Faith said.
He came to the scene to help, saying the culture of violence must leave and mentors must bring prayer and positivity to the community.
"They need somebody out here like me, and you, every day. To let them know that there is a way out. They just going through," Davis said.
Nearby Pierce says she came home right after the shooting -- and is still in shock. She hopes the violence will end, but says it's a tough battle to fight.
"I do try to reach out to people who are younger than me and tell them stuff that I've been through to know that it's not the way you want to go, but then it's hard when nobody wants to listen."
