Lawmakers File Lawsuit Over Constitutional Amendments

Attorneys for Democratic lawmakers have filed a lawsuit to keep term limits and political redistricting questions from showing up on the November ballot.

The lawsuit filed in Cook County argues the state board of elections should not spend public funds on two proposals to amend the Illinois Constitution that it calls invalid.

The first would create term limits for lawmakers. The second would create an independent commission to draw legislative district lines.

Democrats say the measures are not valid because they do not meet a constitutional requirement for changes to the legislature.
