Leonhard Rec Center Grand Opening

After breaking ground last summer -- the brand new Leonhard Recreation Center is open to the public.

Champaign Park district officials welcomed everyone during the ribbon cutting ceremony saying the new center was designed for them --  "the people who matter."

The 39,000 square foot facility boasts four volleyball and two full-sized basketball courts, a three-lane track, a group fitness room and other rooms available for rent.

But many parents -- and their kids -- say they're excited about the center's indoor playground which is open to members only.

"We heard about the indoor playground and being that this last winter we had was pretty brutal it'll be nice to experience that when the weather does get cold," Doug Ellison, a father of two girls, said.

"Between the basketball courts and the playground and the fitness equipment and the walking track, really gives people a great opportunity, at affordable prices, to come out and really get fit and be healthy," Champaign Park District Executive Director Joe Deluce added.

The Rec Center has no pool -- but it's located right across from the Sholem Aquatic Center. That's something park district officials say will be a big plus this summer.
