Urbana Police Giving Away Free Bikes

URBANA -- This Thursday, May 8th, the Urbana Police Department is giving away free bikes to Champaign County residents.

From 10 until noon-- they're giving away more than 100 bikes -- at 704 E. Glover.

Officers say the bikes were either lost or abandoned and will be given out to people in "as is" condition. If you're lucky enough to grab one -- officers advise to write down the serial number to help locate your bike if it gets stolen.

"The next thing that they need to do is actually flip the bike over. On the bottom, you'll see the serial number -- you can also find it on the piece of paper but --  write that down, keep it safe, so if your bike is ever stolen you can give it the police department and we can get your bike back to you," Urbana officer Michelle McKnight said.

Instead of throwing the bikes away -- or recycling them -- Mcknight says this is a great way for the

Urbana police to give back to their community.
