After Crash, Call For Closer Oversight Of Truckers
CHICAGO (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is urging regulators to investigate a deadly crash in Illinois involving a truck driver who's accused of remaining at the wheel for more than 35 hours with less than four hours of rest.
That would violate federal rules for commercial truck and bus drivers.
Durbin sent a letter Thursday to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calling on it to help investigate Monday's crash near Aurora. He also asked the agency to strengthen enforcement of its rules on maximum work hours.
The accident killed an Illinois Tollway worker and injured a state trooper. Both were assisting a stranded motorist.
The truck driver has been charged with operating a commercial motor vehicle while impaired or fatigued and making a false report of record and duty status.
