Last Minute Holiday Travelers Look for Smooth Ride
Luggage, gifts, and entertainment for the delays.
Nearly 200 people wait late Christmas Eve morning to board an Amtrak train to Chicago.
"I kind of love it because you see people coming and going and greeting their family while you're waiting for your own trip." said traveler Dan Hedin.
He's heading to the Chicago area to spend Christmas with his family, but says the Chicago traffic is just a little too much to deal with. So the train makes more sense.
"Amtrak sometimes a little late but always easy as long as you have time. Costs about the same as gas and you get to avoid a lot of headaches." Hedin said.
Others are avoiding the roads this Christmas simply because single digit wind chills can make for a downright dangerous trip.
"I only have a motorcycle, I don't have a car and it's like 10 degrees." said traveler Mike Nodulman.
For the people who do brave the roads this Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day, the Illinois Department of Transportation is hand delivering you a small gift. Suspending all non-emergency road construction until midnight, Christmas night.
IDOT says that will cut down on traffic delays around the state.
