YMCA Loses Major Grant

The University YMCA is paying the price for not cutting ties with a group that supports gay marriage.

The Y is losing a 60 thousand dollar grant from the Catholic Church's Campaign for Human Development program.

The grant is being pulled because in september the University YMCA refused to end it's relationship with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a group that publicly announced their support of gay marriage.

The YMCA's director says while they've taken no stand on gay marriage, it was important for them to not allow others to influence who the Y works with.

The ymca now has a 60 thousand dollar budget deficit for this fiscal year. That's almost 10 percent of their budget.

They're reaching out to the community to raise money to cover the shortfall.

The Y's director says their partnership with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights allows them to help hundreds in the community each year.
