Chief Illiniwek Mural Defaced

"I think that's very disrespectful as far as the people that's here and from this town. We take that kind of seriously.", said Illini fan Antoine

Blue paint now covers what was once the face of this Chief Illiniwek mural  painted on a wall at TGI Friday's in Champaign.

This move now sparking outrage by fans of the chief mascot.

"They've taken away any symbolance of meaning for that symbol...and so I actually find that a little offensive to our local culture.", said Illinois student Ivan Dozier.

"I enjoyed at least somewhere in town we had a piece of our pride.", said

But this isn't the first time this now defaced mural has drawn controversy ...

TGI Friday's owner William Torchia tells us they decided to get rid of the face because people were recently protesting the art outside the restaurant.

In an email to ABC Newschannel 15 Torchia writes in part.

David Twofeathers, traditional Lakota and one of the protesters called the art vulgar and offensive.

And in a recent email Twofeathers waged a war against Torchia saying quote,

"We will burn down your customer base until TIGF has nothing left in C-U."

Illinois student Ivan Dozier, who would've portrayed the chief this year if he were still the mascot says, businesses like fridays should not cave under the pressure from those against the Chief mascot.

"I think the fact that they're not even willing to make a stand. Trying to tread on this semi-compromise is really going to hurt them because now they've kind of offended both sides.", Dozier said.
