Kickapoo Trail Progress

VERMILION COUNTY --  There could soon be a trail linking Vermilion and Champaign counties.

In a special meeting the Vermilion County Conservation District approved a resolution to get a $600,000 grant for the project.

The grant money will be used by the Vermilion County Conservation District to buy a rail line from CSX Corporation.

Champaign County Forest Preserve already bought their portion of the land for $600,000.

Together it will make a twenty four and a half mile trail from Urbana to Kickapoo State Park in Oakwood.

The president of the Vermilion County Conservation District says the total project will cost about ten million dollars and the district already has more than 2 million dollars in grants for construction.

Officials say there is no deadline for the project but it could take many years.

The grant application will be submitted some time next week
