Carle Holds Camp to Help Kids Cope with Loss

MONTICELLO-- The Carle Healing Heart camp brings in kids from all over central Illinois who may have lost a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, or any other loved one.

They show the kids it's ok to open up, and share how they feel. Also, they can keep living their own life without forgetting the loved one they lost.

"When you don't deal with it, it builds up inside and often times comes out in negative ways. And so we want to make sure that doesn't happen and teach children how to deal with it now." said camp director Elizabeth Rieke

"We know that you're sad. Having fun today doesn't mean that you miss that person any less. It still reminds you that you have your life to live and to enjoy yourself still too." said camp facilitator Brittany Smith.

The 12 hour camp had a mix of fun activities and serious sessions that encourage the kids to share their feelings.

Organizers say hat combination really works to make the kids feel comfortable, and usually the kids go back to their parents or conselors after the camp and talk about more than they have in months.
