U of I Enrollment Largest Ever

It's the largest enrollment in school history. Nearly 43,000 students enrolled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this semester.

The numbers got a boost from this year's freshman class, which is the second-largest to date.

More than 7,300 freshmen enrolled at the flagship campus, which is up 5.7 percent from a year ago.

32,000 of the students are undergraduate, and more than 11,000 are graduate or professional students.

"We had a record amount of applications, and then we accept a certain number of them," Association Chancellor for Public Affairs Robin Kaler said. "And then they choose between us and other places they could go. And what we found this year was that more students than we expected had accepted our offers, which is wonderful."

Almost three-quarters of undergraduates are from Illinois. Fifteen percent are international students.
