Uncertain Future for Catlin Schools

VERMILION COUNTY -- Catlin Superintendent, Gary Lewis, says the school unit is in the early stages of finding a solution for students.

The problem... money.

Catlin Schools are getting less state funding and enrollment has leveled off, right around 150 students.

School officials are welcoming input from the community.

Lewis says three options are being looked at: sending high school students to Westville, cooperating with Jamaica Schools or a full blown consolidation with Jamaica.

Jim Owens is the Superintendent of Westville Schools and says, "We were approached back last year during the year that the possibility of Catlin maybe sending their high school students here to Westville High School.  We currently have about three hundred and forty students at the high school and we've got a capacity of about six hundred."

The Catlin School Board held a meeting last week to get public input on the matter.

Whenever a decision is reached, it will have to be voted on by the public.

Superintendent Lewis adds the soonest anything would change is next school year.
