"Fairing" in Sweltering, Summer Heat
The Christian County Fair is just getting underway but meteorologists say the temperature feels like it is in the triple digits.
"You know it seems like the Taylorville, Christian County Fair... It's always hot that week," vendor Cindy Morgan said.
But there are always plenty of ways to beat the heat.
"Some rides got shade and some rides put off enough wind to keep you cool," ride operator William Ware said.
Like the Paratrooper, which Ware helps run. But until that ride gets turning Ware is left burning.
"Hot, humid and you gotta keep hydrated because if you don't you pass out," Ware said.
There are also plenty of cool drinks to keep fairgoers hydrated but what about the vendors who are left to sizzle with the corn dogs and the funnel cake?
"We do have air conditioning in the stand but running the three friers that we run does get awfully hot," Morgan said.
"Awfully hot" were the words we heard a lot until we made our way to the bumper boats.
"It's pretty cold right now. It [the water] came out of the fire hydrant and the fire hose," the bumper boat operator said as he was swimming in the frigid pool.
But that same frigid water did not stop Isabella Sutton from jumping in.
"Well I'm swimming and it's actually really fun," Sutton said.
Organizers of the Christian County Fair say there are plenty of first-aid kits and water for fairgoers. They will also have an ambulance on the grounds throughout the weekend.
The Christian County Fair draws about 10,000 people during its six-day run.
