Carle Hospital to Introduce New Fee and Billing System

URBANA--"There will be additional charges for the hospital where in the past there was only one bill for the physician's office visit." said Carle Vice President of Revenue Cycle Operations, Dawn Waldren.

That bill will be $205 for visiting their building, and that's a separate fee from the cost of the medical services a patient receives.

"This is a way for Carle to be proactive and making sure that we have sustainability for decades to come." Walden said.

But Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing says a lot of people are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to finances.
She says Carle Foundation Hospital is already riding waves of cash.

"Times are tough for a lot of people, but times are not tough for Carle because they are raking in money." Prussing said.

Carle patients we talked to say it's not a tough decision, if the hospital follows through with the extra fee, they will find other options.

"I've always gone to Carle for my healthcare needs before, but if it's going to cost me extra money just for walking through the door, Ill go to Provena instead." said U of I student, Matthew Pest.

The hospital contests, that's a knee-jerk reaction and insured people won't really notice the extra charge.

"For most of our patients there isn't going to be additional cost for them, for those who have the dual coverage." said Walden
