Champaign Unit 4's Alternative to Suspensions

CHAMPAIGN--An alternative to suspension is on the way for students at Champaign Unit 4 Schools.

Administrators say, they want to better serve students by helping them change any behavioral or social issues they may have.

School leaders decided to look into this policy, after surveying 25 students who said they viewed their suspensions as a mini-vacation.

Which is something, the district says, is not helping their students.

The new program will require students to report to the Family Information Center instead of staying home.

The new program will start next school year, and cost $190,000 due to new hires including an associate principal.

During the school year 2011-2012, Unit 4 had more than 1,300 suspensions throughout grades K-12.
