IEMA: Beardstown Could Be Hardest Hit by Flooding

Beardstown is one of several communities the Illinois Emergency Management Agency is keeping a watchful eye on.

IEMA said we are seeing the tail end of the cresting of most rivers affected by floods, but we won't know how bad the damage is until those floodwaters recede.

IEMA said Beardstown could be among the hardest-hit areas.

"Certainly from an evacuation standpoint they had the most--they certainly had a significant threat to the water supply, the water treatment facility that's right there," IEMA representative Jonathon Monken said. "So certainly we're going to see many, many homes impacted there once the final numbers come in. Obviously, we'll know for sure, but at least 150 homes or so."

Meanwhile, the state has handed out close to 1 million sandbags, and provided 49 pumping systems throughout the state.

About 20 crews made up of inmates are also working to prevent flood damage.

IEMA said once the floodwaters recede, the assessment process will begin, as people without flood insurance will rally for federal funds.
