House Committee Approves Medical Marijuana

Medicinal marijuana is one step closer to becoming legal in Illinois. A House committee voted today to legalize the medical use of the drug.

The proposal will allow patients to carry up to 2.5 ounces, or 70 grams, of marijuana for a two-week period. The patient would need to have a debilitating medical condition to get a medical marijuana card.

Sponsor Lou Lang is confident his proposal can pass the House.

"There has been many people involved," Lang said. "And there's a lot of people now that believe with the national momentum on this issue, we have a chance to make it happen."

The bill passed in committee by an 11-4 vote. It now heads to the House floor for consideration. A different version of the bill failed in the same chamber last year.
