Make-A-Wish Looking for Volunteers

More than 11,000 children across the state have experienced the magic of a wish through the work of hundreds of local volunteers. Now Make-A-Wish is looking for more miracle makers who are interested in making dreams come true.

Thousands of children throughout the state are going through life with a life-threatening medical condition looking for hope and inspiration from their family and community.

"It takes a special person to volunteer with Make-A-Wish," said Community Relations Manager Laura Huerta. "You have to love children and you have to really understand what the families are going through and kinda have an imagination of sorts where you can plan a wish."

Since the Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded locally in 1985, volunteers and community members have been working hard to plan and carry out wishes from start to finish.

From shopping sprees to trips to Disneyland, wish granters have the opportunity to impact the lives of children by offering their support and encouragement.

Volunteer, Jennifer Pinkerton, has been a wish-granter for the past six years and says volunteering not only effects the lives of children, but also the life of the volunteer.

"To give them an opportunity just to be a kid again and to give them the opportunity to be a family and just have some time away from the normal everyday that they go through, treatments and unknown futures and wondering what's going on, it's just a rewarding experience and to be able to help them with that is just great," Pinkerton said.

Jennifer is just one of hundreds of volunteers across the state granting about six wishes every year changing the lives and offering hope to children who need it most.

Wish-granting volunteers work in teams of two to organize and make the dreams come true. Volunteers are asked to help out about 12 hours per month.
and Make-A-Wish is specifically looking for volunteer's who are bi-lingual.

If you're interested in becoming a wish-granter, Make-A-Wish is hosting a free training session for volunteers in the Springfield area on Wednesday, March 13 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Space is limited and per-registration is required. You can reserve a spot by contacting Eric Stuebs at stuebs@wishes.org or 312-602-9413. All volunteers must be over 21 years old.
