Price at the Pump Frustrating Farmers

When dealing with rising fuel prices, there's not much most of us can do about it. But, that's not the case for farmers. Some buy fuel in advance, locking in a price or storing the fuel on their farm or elsewhere.

As farmer Tim Seifert plows snow in Auburn, he can't help but think about the upcoming planting season. As farmers across central Illinois prepare for another season in the fields, besides the weather, they are watching something else: the price at the pump.

"We have indicators that we watch for, basically, the world," Seifert said. "What's happening around the world with fuel and what's happening around the U.S. with fuel. And, we have advisers who help tell us if we should be buying fuel early or not."

Tim, like many farmers, will sometimes purchase fuel in advance. Some store it on their property or somewhere else or, they will prepay.

"It's kind of ironic," Seifert said. "Around election time, we had high $2 a gallon gas. Now, the election is over, they are in office again, and now we are at almost $4 a gallon gas, so it's frustrating."

The price at the pump is on the rise. According to AAA, diesel prices in Springfield have jumped 24 cents a gallon from a year ago. Nationwide, it has gone up 17 cents from a year go.

"The price of crude started going up in the late November and December time frame," Bill Fleischli with the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association said. "It didn't hit the full increase in that time frame. It has now hit that full increase."

Fleischli said the past few months are not the norm.

"Usually prices go down in the fuel market from September until about February or end of March," he said. "Then, the spring season, the driving season, and the planting season, and it all starts going back up. Usually that happens, but this year, it has been a little different."

So, like Tim, you may constantly think, "Do I buy now or later?"

"Sometimes you hit a home run, other times, you don't," Seifert said.

According to AAA, the price per gallon in Springfield is $3.83. That's up 39 cents from last year at this time. Nationwide, AAA says the average is $3.78, which is up 17 cents from last year.
