Local Effects of Sequestration

CHAMPAIGN-- Darlene Kloeppel, Community Services Director for the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, says, "We're expecting 8.5% across the board for a variety of programs. That's a lot, it's a lot of money."

Sequestration. It's the new dirty word that describes the massive and automatic spending cuts on federal programs that will go into effect on march 1st if congress doesn't reach an agreement on deficit reduction. Sue Grey, President and CEO of the United Way, says, "We understand that cuts need to be made. Our federal budget is in a crisis state and so we have to make some changes."

Many local organizations will be heavily affected. Says Grey, "Programs that serve persons with disabilities, mental health issues, early childhood, meals for seniors, that sort of thing." Kloeppel adds, "that would affect several of our programs that deal with people in poverty or people that are at risk of poverty."

Some of the funding losses are staggering: Illinois will lose 3.5 million dollars in grants to help prevent and treat substance abuse. More than 3 quarters of a million dollars for meals for seniors would be lost. And about 5,000 fewer children will receive vaccines for diseases like tetanus, Hepatitis B, and the flu because of cuts to vaccination programs.

Kloeppel says, "Obviously when you experience cuts in the federal government, it affects not only the federal offices and benefits, but it affects the private sector as well. It affects people doing business with the government, it affects suppliers and vendors that do business with them."

The state will also lose about 1.4 million dollars in funding for job search assistance and skills training programs that could affect more than 50-thousand people state-wide. Grey says, "Rather than make across the board cuts, would it be possible to be more strategic."
