National Blood Donor Month

ILLINOIS--January marks National Blood Donor month.

A critical time for blood banks, as they wait for people to give blood.

Today, the Community Blood Services of Illinois held a blood drive in St. Joseph.

Health officials say, now is when they really need donations, as many tend to get sick around this time of year.

They say a person has 10 pints of blood, and donating will only take one pint away.

It takes about an hour of your day, but only 5-10 minutes of it is spent giving blood.

Some common myths of why you can't donate:

Getting tattoos and piercings within the last year, and those with diabetes sometimes think they can't donate.

Both are simply not true.

If you want to host a blood drive, or donate, you can call 1-800-217-GIVE.
