CHAMPAIGN-- THOSE WHO KNEW EMILY DAVIS SAY SHE WAS A LOVING MOTHER WHO LIVED FOR HER FAMILY.
WHEN SHE DIED TRAGICALLY IN MONDAY'S MURDER-SUICIDE SHE LEFT BEHIND THREE CHILDREN: AN INFANT SON AND TWO SCHOOL-AGE DAUGHTERS.
"She was a really active parent in the PTA, and with each of her childrens' classrooms for different activities that went on in the class. For parties or special events she'd always be the first one to jump right in and help out with the classroom," SAID BILL TAYLOR, PRINCIPAL AT SOUTH SIDE SCHOOL.
ONE DAUGHTER IS IN FOURTH GRADE AT SOUTH SIDE ELEMENTARY, THE OTHER IS A SIXTH GRADER AT EDISON MIDDLE SCHOOL.
IN LIGHT OF RECENT NATIONAL EVENTS, SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARE AGAIN FORCED TO FOCUS ON THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH TRAGEDY.
JUSTIN UPPINGHOUSE, PRINCIPAL AT EDISON, SAID IT IS HIS "HOPE TO KEEP IT AS PERSONAL AS POSSIBLE SINCE SCHOOL WILL PROBABLY BE THE MOST NORMAL PART OF HER LIFE FOR AWHILE."
EDISON WILL MAKE SOCIAL WORKERS AVAILABLE FOR ANY STUDENT WHO REQUESTS THEM, AND PRINCIPAL TAYLOR WILL ADDRESS HIS FOURTH GRADERS DIRECTLY.
"First thing Tuesday morning the social worker and I will go into both fourth grade classrooms and we'll meet with the students and the focus of our meeting will be how sad it is for a student to lose their parent, and what are the ways we can be good friends."
HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT COMMUNITY REACTION HAS BEEN STRONG, WITH OTHER PARENTS OFFERING TO HELP DAVIS' FAMILY IN ANY NUMBER OF WAYS, WHETHER IT BE FINANCIAL, FOOD, OR JUST FRIENDSHIP.
"We've had a lot of response from our parents, which is the usual for South Side parents," Taylor said.
