Non-Profit Donations in C-U

Champaign Mayor Don Gerard said, "Champaign allocated $50,000 to a summer youth employment program, where Urbana has none."

While Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing said, "Champaign has done some good things, like they've just done a youth employment thing. I think we can learn from their experience on that."

Gerard: "We've saved up $7.2 million for the Bristol Park to provide affordable housing."

Prussing: "When Champaign decided they were just going to do one neighborhood, they cut back on their funding."

Different cities with different priorities. That's how the mayors of Champaign and Urbana both summed up the relationship between the two cities. When word came this week that Urbana had made payments of $158,000 last fiscal year to several non-profits in both towns, Mayor Prussing suggested that Champaign should be pulling more weight when it comes to giving.

According to Prussing, "These mental health services have been really hurt by state cuts, and it hurts the entire community, so this is a way of trying to see if we can work together and maybe maximize the impact of our money."

Mayor Gerard insists that it's his responsibility to first make sure public projects like the library and the UC2B internet service are taken care of. He says the city council's dedication to raising private money for philanthropic efforts makes up for any shortfall from government funds.

Says Gerard, "It's just how you look at your budget and where you put your priorities. We do things a little differently, that's why we're two different cities."
