St. Joseph-Ogden Students Attend Inauguration

ST. JOSEPH-- 13 lucky St. Joseph-Ogden High School students took part in Monday's historic inauguration ceremony. They were among the 800,000 people who packed the national mall in Washington on Monday to witness President Obama's swearing-in.

Social science teacher Marshall Schacht and the group of students returned home late last night after squeezing in some last-minute sightseeing before their flight. The group was paired with a school from Iowa on their four-day adventure which included visiting several national monuments. Among them were the Smithsonian, Ford's Theater, and the White House. Everyone had their favorite, but the biggest draw of all was the inauguration itself.

Schacht said, "Coming from a small community and going into such a diverse place with so many different people from every walk of life, every different background. Our kids I think felt maybe a greater sense of what America is really like and what America is all about."

Among the favorite sights for students were the Holocaust Museum and the Jefferson Memorial. They say they enjoyed bonding with other schools from across the country that were there top witness history too. Schacht says it was rewarding as an educator to return to school today and see other students show so much interest in the trip.
