New Storm Sewers for Danville Neighborhood

CHAMPAIGN-- For years, flooding was common in the Lake Boulevard area in north Danville, but as a new storm sewer project nears completion, residents hope it will become a thing of the past. The neighborhood lies in a hilly area east of Lake Vermillion and north of Boiling Springs Road.

Rain runoff and snow melt generally flow west toward the lake, but a lack of natural drainage has been the source of heavy flooding.

Newell Township supervisor Jim Wilson said, "Everything just kind of funnels onto Cornell St. It was flooding people's homes because the water couldn't get away, and septic tanks were backing up, leeching out. So we've been working on this for years." He said that the homes were first built in the 1930s, prior to zoning laws, and as a result many of them unknowingly blocked natural avenues for water runoff to flow.

Residents had been filing complaints for years, and in October Central Illinois Tile of Champaign began work tearing up Cornell St. to install storm sewers and drainage pipe.

"We used township bridge funds, which can be used to rebuild bridges and drainage," Wilson said. The project cost $279,000 and was paid for entirely with taxpayer money. The sewers will now funnel water the length of Cornell St. south to Lake Vermillion.

All the sewers and drain pipe have been installed, but Newell Township won't officially complete the project until Cornell St. is paved later this spring. Residents and the township are nonetheless excited to see it in action. "Two inches of rain tomorrow so we'll see how it works," a hopeful Wilson said.
