Decatur Officer Shot Investigating Drug Warrant

UPDATED January 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
A Decatur police officer is in stable condition this afternoon after being shot in the leg while investigating a drug warrant.

The incident occurred when police knocked on the door of a home in the 900-block of North Taylor Street in Decatur to execute a search warrant for illegal drugs. When officers got no answer, they tried to force their way into the home, but could not gain access because the door had been reinforced from the inside.

At some point, a single shot was fired through the door from inside the house, shattering and fracturing the officer's lower right leg.

Dennis Wayne Kendall, 32, the target of the warrant, is now in police custody. He faces preliminary charges of attempted murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, armed violence, felony drug charges, and operating a fortified drug house. Police found felony amounts of drugs and the 9mm weapon used to shoot the officer in Kendall's house.

Police are investigating how Kendall, a convicted felon, obtained the gun. Additional arrests may be forthcoming.

The injured officer is an eight-year veteran of the Decatur Police Department. Authorities are not releasing his name.
