New Champaign Police Contracts Approved

CHAMPAIGN--Champaign City Council members vote unanimously to approve a new police contract.

The last time council approved similar contracts was three years ago.

Some changes were made in the new police contracts including incentives for officers to live in the city.

This will entail a $3,000 incentive to pay for moving expenses, if the officer is moving to a new home within city limits.

If they chose to move out of the city, within three years of receiving payment, they would have to pay back some of that.

Another change, officers will be expected to take a drug and alcohol test, after an on-duty discharge of a weapon.

Pay raises are also included in the new contract:

Officers serving 1-9 years will receive a 2% increase each year

10-14 years serving will see a 2.5% increase

15 or more years of serving will get a 3% increase.

The new contract takes effect July 2013, and runs through June 2015.
