Shop Local Helps Area Businesses
After a shopping season disrupted by storms, holiday retail sales this year are the weakest since 2008.
According to a report, consumers spent less on retail due to a lagging economy and natural disasters, but it wasn't all bad news for local business.
Many retailers in Champaign say this year's sales are much higher than previous years, and the majority of that came from "shop local."
The owner of Jane Addams Book Shop, Don Elmore, says that the local shopping economy is slowly improving for area businesses.
"We had a couple of big book signings in the Christmas season last year that we didn't have this year, and I think even including those we probably still did better," said Elmore.
Elmore also said that the Champaign Center partnership with shop local made a big impact on the increase of local sales this year. He is hoping the Champaign community will continue to shop locally year round.
