Chicago Hits 500 Murders in 2012
Chicago has hit a milestone that it hasn't seen since 2008: 500 murders. And those numbers become more disturbing when you put them into perspective.
Last year, Chicago tallied 435 murders. So far this year, that number is at 500. That's a 16.25 percent increase.
Now compare that with New York City, which has a population three times larger than Chicago. Last year at this time, there were 511 murders. As of today, the Big Apple has logged 413 homicides. That's a 19 percent decrease.
Add all that up, and you get this staggering number: If New York City had Chicago's murder rate, New York's homicide total right now would be a whopping 1,224.
