Cubs win, Cardinals lose
CHICAGO (AP) -- Alfonso Soriano homered in his first two at-bats, Geovany Soto and Mark DeRosa went deep and the surging Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4 Friday for their seventh win in eight games.

Soriano connected on the first pitch from Tom Gorzelanny for his third leadoff home run in four games. Soriano launched a three-run shot in the second inning that made it 6-0, giving him five homers this week and eight this season.

Chicago won its 10th straight overall against the Pirates, including 7-0 this year.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Andy Sonnanstine carried a shutout into the eighth inning and added two singles to a 12-hit outburst in the streaking Tampa Bay Rays' 3-1 victory over the sagging St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

Akinori Iwamura had three hits and an RBI for the AL East leaders, who are eight games above .500 for the first time in franchise history. Iwamura is on a 9-for-21 tear for the Rays (25-17), who have won eight of nine with three shutouts while outscoring the opposition 38-15.

Isringhausen on disabled list
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals put struggling closer Jason Isringhausen on the 15-day disabled list today because of a cut on his pitching hand.

Isringhausen has an 8.00 ERA and six blown saves.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported last weekend that Isringhausen hurt his right hand striking a television set in frustration in manager Tony La Russa's office.

Isringhausen was 32-for-34 in save opportunities last year, a season after he missed the team's World Series run because of hip surgery.

Isringhausen and La Russa have said repeatedly that the pitcher's problems are not physical.
