Chicago-- Nearly a week after winning the democratic ticket for lieutenant governor, Scott Lee Cohen is dropping out of the race.
Cohen made the announcement tonight at a chicago bar.
Cohen faced a firestorm of criticism after it was revealed he had been accused of abusing his ex wife and holding a knife to the throat of his ex girlfriend.
The girlfriend had been charged with prostitution. And cohen admits he once used steroids.
Cohen spent two million dollars of his own money on his campaign.
Earlier today, Dick Durbin blamed himself and other party leaders for not finding out about Cohen's past.
"But i would say to him and every member of this party at every level we have a special responsability to this party to make sure that this never happens again it's an embarrassment to our party and an embarrassment to our state"

Chicago police rule book gets edit after 40 years

CHICAGO (AP) -- For the first time in four decades, the Chicago Police Department's rule book is getting an edit.
Department officials say the approximately 16-inch stack of paper is full of outdated orders and entries.
For example, there's a 1924 rule that officers must wear linen collars with their uniforms. The book also has unnecessary entries, such as an explanation of daylight-saving time.
Rachel Johnston is the department's director of research and development. She says the book is a mess and a team of officers and other department employees is cleaning it up.
Their mission is to trim the book by about two-thirds. The team of workers is starting from scratch.
Officials say the revised rules will be posted online later this year.
