URBANA- The University of Illinois professor, fired over a complaint about his religious beliefs, can continue teaching. But his lawyer says it's unclear if Dr. Kenneth Howell will return to the classroom. Dr. Howell's lawyer says the professor of Catholicism has not decided if he will accept an adjunct position in the fall. In addition to the re-instatement of Prof. Howell, the university also decided to cut ties with St. John's Catholic Newman Center. In the center paid Catholic studies instructors. But Thursday university decided St. John's Catholic Newman center will no longer pay instructors, like Howell, who teach Catholicism courses. The decision comes with the recommendation by the Faculty Senate's General University Policy Committee. However, Howell is not completely out of the water.

"We will be looking to see whether Prof. Howell in teaching was being objective and not promoting any activity or opinion or dislike of any group," says Jeffrey Dawson, with the Committee on Academic Freedom and tenure.

Professor Howell says he was fired at the end of the spring semester after sending an e-mail explaining his negative opinions on homosexual sex. Thursday the university said the department of religion will continue Howell's adjunct appointment for the fall semester. If he accepts, the professor will teach Introduction to Catholicism. Regardless of whether Dr. Howell returns to the U of I, the Faculty Senate Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure will continue to investigate the incident that lead to his dismissal.

Professor Howell was not available to comment. He has until August 6 to decide if he will return to the classroom.
