Tim Skov is the owner of Wingin Out, and says, "Wholesale food prices have actually gone up as well because transportation prices have gone up for the trucks." Analysts are showing concern as the national average cost of gas has risen for 32 straight days.
For producers and consumers, the effects have taken a heavy toll. Kesler says, "Anytime the prices go up, like fuel, that we can't control, that just comes out of our pocket. We can't pass that price along, so high prices do hurt us." Gas prices traditionally rise anywhere from 40 to 60 cents a gallon in late march through early may. If that happens this year, it could easily send the national average to more than $4.00 a gallon.
Says Skov, "You're getting less out of your paycheck and then more of it's going to gas. So it's harder to come do your job, especially as a driver."
After last year's drought, farmers are hoping for a break anywhere they can find one. Kesler says, "Every year is a new year. Who knows? It could be a wet year this year, so we're going to go into this year hoping we'll get record yields and record prices, and we'll just have to see what happens."
