Normally when we hear the words Democrat and Republican we picture two opposing sides and a few butting heads. However, the closely divided Champaign County Board are looking to set aside their differences and start getting things done.
"I will bring together our caucus and I will bring together this board because, simply stated, this is not a personal agenda and this is not a political agenda," said Newly appointed Champaign County Chair, Alan Kurtz. "This is an agenda to help those people who put us into office, to serve the responsibility of serving the public."
Serving the public is the top priority for Kurtz, who is less focused on the boards political divide and more focused on the current issues in Champaign County.
With twenty-two members on the board, voting on issues could become an issue itself.
"Sometimes there will be a stalemate and I am just hoping that we can bring together both sides to compromise," said Kurtz. "Get together on an issue, even though we have different opinions of an issue, if we can get together an talk about it we can really move ahead."
Republican board memeber, Max Mitchell said that he is excited and a bit nervous for what's to come.
"We have a Democrat that's Chair and we have a Republican, John Schroeder, who is Vice Chair and I think that really is a benefit to the citizens of Champaign County because we're going to look at a lot of issues that are going to affect everybody," Mitchell said. "But were going to have a real level headed, sensable approach to government."
The main topics that the Champaign County Board will be discussing within the next couple of weeks is the budget, the nursing home and assessing the county jail among others.
Kurtz said he has a lot of work ahead of him, but he is excited to give back to the Champaign community.
