Normally during the winter months we anticipate Jack Frost to come nipping at our nose. However, this year mother nature is giving us a gift early with above normal temperatures, which means more savings for you and the city of Champaign.
In December, we begin to see more plows and shovels, but with the mild winter weather, it gives the city some extra time and money to prepare for the colder winter months.
"Anytime that the weather is warmer to start us out it saves money on supplies and we don't have to have crews out plowing snow and it saves on wages and things like that as well," said Kris Koester from the Champaign Public Works Department.
Fewer plows out on the roads mean less wear and tear on the streets and salt on your vehicles. The warmer weather also gives construction crews more time to fix holes in the road from the expanding and contracting ice.
State Climatologist, Jim Angel, says that this weather is far from normal.
"Our normal highs for this time of year are about 41 and our normal lows are about 25 so were about 30 degrees above the mark as far as that goes," said Angel.
The warmer weather is especially helpful to daycare owner Sandy Bradley. It not only saves her money on her power bills, but it is also making her job at the daycare a little bit easier.
"It's just wonderful it's so nice out," said Bradley. "The kids love being outside and in December we never get to go outside like this. It gets rid of a lot of energy."
State Climatologist, Jim Angel, also said that there is about a 1 in 3 chance for a white Christmas and we are supposed to start seeing much cooler "normal" temperatures starting tomorrow.
The Champaign Public Works Department tells us that it is hard to project what their savings will be this year although one of their biggest savings from last year's mild winter was salt costs.
