Getting Started:

Set realistic goals.  Experts say setting short and long term goals will help you get motivated when you’re starting out.

  1. Reward yourself.  Experts say a reward for reaching your goal will help you go even further.
  2. Exercise.  Experts say it’s important to do both cardio and weights.  They say when lifting, work different muscle groups on different days.  Building muscle will help you burn more calories.  But remember before you start with a new workout routine or any major change in your lifestyle, make sure you consult with your physician.
  3. Diet.  Experts we consulted say keep a food journal, recording every single thing you put in your mouth.  They say people don’t even realize how much they eat or the types of food they eat.  Keeping a food journal makes you really think about what you are eating.
  4. Balance out your diet.  Experts say it’s important to keep a good balance, do not eliminate all the foods you love, just eat them in a healthy way.
  5. Avoid Fried Foods.  Experts say choose other methods like baking, grilling or broiling.
  6. Eat more veggies.  Experts say substituting sides like French Fries for veggies is an easy change.
  7. Portion size.  As Americans get bigger so do portion sizes.  Experts say when you go out to eat ask for a to-go box and put half of your meal in it.  Only eat what’s left on your plate.  Sometimes a full restaurant portions are 2 to 3 times more than you should be eating.
  8. Grocery Shopping.  Experts say start at the produce section and work your way around.  They say avoid the aisles and all the preservatives in them.
  9. Make a list.  Make a list before you go to the store and stick to it.

Don’t go Hungry.  Experts say going to the grocery when you’re hungry will result in extra goodies in your cart.
