Nick Janes
WICD Reporter
Nick began at NewsChannel 15 as an intern in the summer of 2006. He then joined the WICD team on a full-time basis in September 2006 as a producer and photographer. After graduating last December from the University of Illinois right here in Champaign-Urbana, he made the transition on-air.
"I'm so thrilled to begin my career right here in East-Central Illinois," Nick says. "As a journalist, my responsibility is to the people in this community. I'll do my very best to keep the public informed."
In the summer of 2005, he had the opportunity to intern for MSNBC in New York City, helping launch "The Situation with Tucker Carlson." Nick worked on the show's production staff, helping edit video for each night's broadcast. It was that experience, he says, that solidified his desire to go into television.
“That internship was really the best thing for me. I was able to learn from some of the very best in the business. I'd love to be a reporter in New York someday!"
Nick also worked for the Discovery Channel in San Francisco and held the sports editor position at the Daily Illini, the University of Illinois student newspaper. During the Spring semester of 2006, he co-hosted and produced a weekly sports-talk radio show that aired on an Urbana FM station.
Nick spent his childhood in the Midwest, going to elementary school in DeKalb, Illinois; middle and high school in Weyauwega, Wisconsin, before returning to Illinois for college.
He's a huge Chicago sports fan: he loves the Bears, Bulls and Sox. He also enjoys listening to his iPod, working out and hanging out with his friends and family.
