IN THE NEWS: WAZE -- AND POLICE
WASHINGTON (AP) -- It's used it to keep track of things like traffic delays and speed traps. But a sheriff's group wants Google's Waze app cuffed -- because it considers it a threat to public safety. The National Sheriffs' Association has doubled down on its opposition. First, it said those who report where police are on duty could make it possible for officers to be ambushed. Now, the group says, because the app reports speed traps -- it will be harder to catch those who go over the limit. The sheriffs' group claims that could cause a spike in traffic deaths. Meanwhile Google says the app's reporting of speed traps actually saves lives -- because when drivers know of speed traps, they slow down to avoid tickets.
IN THE NEWS: E-CIGS DISCUSSED AS HEALTH THREAT
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Are e-cigarettes like regular smokes made from tobacco? California health officials seem to think so. They have declared electronic cigarettes a health threat that should be strictly regulated -- like tobacco-based products are now. The move by the California Department of Public Health puts "Cali" in league with other states and health advocates in seeking tighter controls over "vaping." An official says while not as bad as conventional smokes, e-cigs "are not harmless" and "are not safe."
