IN THE NEWS: HOME DEPOT BREACH WAS EXTENSIVE
NEW YORK (AP) -- The nation's largest home improvement retailer now is confirming it is the victim of one of the largest data thefts in U.S. history. Home Depot says 56 million debit and credit cards are believed to have been swiped as part of a data breach that occurred between April and September at its stores in the U.S. and Canada. That makes it the second-largest breach for a retailer on record, second only to the one that hit the parent company of T.J. Maxx in 2007. The Home Depot breach is also more extensive than the one that hit Target late last year. Home Depot says the malware used to rip off the system has been eliminated -- and that there's no evidence that debit PIN numbers were compromised.
IN THE NEWS: MONTANA MAN IMPRISONED FOR TRYING TO GET GIRL TO KILL HERSELF ONLINE
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) -- He already had been in prison for raping a girl starting when she was just 12. And now a Montana man is charged with trying to get his victim to kill herself by cutting her wrists and taking prescription pulls -- while he watched on a web cam. Authorities say 21-year-old Michael John Morlan was out on bail on the rape charges when he tried to get the girl -- who by then was 15 -- to kill herself. He says he wanted to watch her on Skype to make sure she did it right. The girl eventually disconnected the call and went to her parents for help. Morlan is to be arraigned Monday on new charges stemming from the suicide attempt.
