SEN. AL FRANKEN WANTS DAVID LETTERMAN TO RUN FOR OFFICE

NEW YORK (AP) -- David Letterman for senate? Senator Al Franken would like to see it. Franken suggests Letterman should return to his home state of Indiana and run for the U.S. Senate. Franken says Letterman has the qualifications to be a good senator -- decades in comedy. Franken should know. He's a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member. Letterman's retiring from his late night CBS show next month.

DC-SMOKING AGE

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Washington councilman wants teens to "butt" out. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie has introduced a measure that would raise the legal "smoking age" in the nation's capital to 21. Now, 18-year-olds can buy or possess tobacco products. McDuffie says research shows introducing people to tobacco later in life can save lives. New York City passed similar legislation last year. McDuffie also wants to ban powdered booze in Washington.

OLD YANKEE STADIUM LETTERS-AUCTION E0824

NEW YORK (AP) -- No one wants "Yankee Stadium." Not the famed ballpark, but the giant letters that spelled "Yankee Stadium" on the original Bronx ballpark. They failed to sell at auction yesterday. Sotheby's estimated the letters could go for up to $600,000. Yankee legend Reggie Jackson owns the iconic 10-foot-high sign. He bought the stadium sign in 2008, after the last game in the old ballpark.

PEORIA-KITTEN RESCUED

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Lucky kitty -- thanks to an attentive recycling truck driver. Angelo Almendarez was collecting containers along his route in suburban Phoenix, when he heard a strange sound. It was a kitten meowing in the back of his truck. Officials in Peoria, Arizona, say the kitten is a male orange tabby less than three weeks old. Phoenix TV station KPHO reports the kitten has been adopted by an employee of Peoria's Streets Division.
